The Zen of Abstraction

The Zen of Abstraction

Discover a refuge of silence at Albuquerque Museum. Join Museum Curator Titus O’Brien for a brief guided meditation followed by a tour of select works in the exhibition, When Modern Was Contemporary. The artistic avant-garde of the 1940s – 1960s was heavily influenced by Asian philosophies and religions, especially Zen Buddhism. Paintings by artists like Mark Rothko, Mark Tobey, Kenzo Okada and others show this influence, and can themselves serve as objects of meditation.

Assistant Curator of Art Titus O’Brien has been practicing Zen since being introduced to the idea by a visiting professor in college, the composer and artist John Cage – a famous peer of many of the artists in this exhibit. Titus is an authorized instructor in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition. He is also a painter, sculptor, writer, and designer who has exhibited internationally.
